During my work with the Celadon Research Division of Ellumen Inc., I was a co-inventor on a patent titled “Directable Antenna System and Method for Improved Communications Quality” that will issue on June 07, 2022. This is the seventh patent I have been a co-inventor on. If you are interested in learning more about my prior five patents see the post titled “Description of Three Patents Named Co-Inventor On Assigned to Ellumen Inc” and also the posts titled “Microwave Imaging Device Patent Named Co-Inventor on Assigned to Ellumen Inc”, “Phase Confocal Method for Near-Field Microwave Imaging Patent named co-inventor on Issued”, and “Accurate Signal Compensations for UWB Radar Imaging in Dispersive Medium Patent named co-inventor on Issued“.
The patent describes a system that includes at least one directable antenna which has an omnidirectional antenna at a center, an inner frequency selective surface centered around the omnidirectional antenna, and an outer frequency selective surface that is concentric to and spaced from the inner frequency selective surface. An antenna controller can vary antenna beamwidth by changing states of active elements of the inner and the outer frequency selective surfaces. The system includes a searchable database and is configured to direct the transmission of electromagnetic waves based on information stored in the searchable database. In one embodiment of the system of the invention, the system includes a filter configured to bandpass filter received signals, an amplifier configured to amplify received signals, a TV interface configured to demodulated received signals. In this embodiment the searchable database includes prior received and analyzed signals, TV tower information, TV channel programming information, and directions to point the antenna towards for best reception, best center frequencies to filter, and best gain values to amplify. In another embodiment of the system of the invention, the system includes a global position system receiver configured to determine a current location, at least one modem configured to receive signals, and the searchable data includes prior location information, prior received and analyzed signals, and cell tower information.
The patent also describes a method of directing an antenna beam by receiving an electromagnetic wave in a desired direction using at least one directable antenna. This method has an omnidirectional antenna at a center, a frequency selective surface centered around the omnidirectional antenna, and active elements on the frequency selective surface are controlled to cause reception of the electromagnetic wave in a desired direction based on information stored in a searchable database. In one embodiment of the method of the invention the database comprises at least one of geographic location data, prior best center frequency data, or prior best gain value data. In another embodiment of the method of the invention the database comprises at least one of prior location information, prior received and analyzed signals or cell tower information.
Below is a patent certificate that was created to celebrate the accomplishment of having the patent granted. This is the third patent I have had issued since after the USPTO celebrated the issuance of 10 million patents and changed the patent cover design. This is the first patent I have had issued with Kathi Vidal serving as Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
